Interesting things - 2025 12 07
- The Barely Legal Type: Purity Culture, Rape Culture, and America’s Lose-Lose Proposition for Girls. Sad but true.
- The Conservative Grievance Business Is Always Hiring. About that Sooner girl who wrote the horrendous essay in a psychology class and then tried to get her trans TA fired for failing her.
- How Local Reporters Manage the Dangers of Covering Extremism. One of the reporters featured is on the beat in my area.
- Why this Indigenous winter scene is not what it seems. It's the work of Native artist Red Star. I recognize her work from feminist art bots but didn't know much about her. Now I want to go to one of the exhibits this post talks about.
- How Caravaggio Painted Class and Clothes. Particularly relevant after our visit to the Kimbell where we saw both The Cardsharps and Judith.
- A week inside the opaque court where CT immigrants learn their fate. A local Connecticut publication spent a week in immigration court (the executive branch "court system" for immigrants) and reported back on it. I didn't deal with this part of immigration practice at all when I was working for an immigration lawyer in the 1990s. I did prepare some asylum and refugee paperwork, and my boss was on the State Bar's Unauthorized Practice of Law committee, which dealt with the "notarios" mentioned in the article. That was apparently a dangerous proposition, enough that he had all his bills diverted to the office so that he couldn't be doxxed easily.
- Meet the billionaire pushing taxpayer-funded school vouchers. The Washington Post profiles Jeff Yass, the Pennsylvania billionaire who paid for Texas' voucher program. Not the taxes, which are from our pocketbooks, but the donations to political campaigns that made it possible.
- The Fragile Heart’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays. I don't think of myself as fragile but I do have some unhappy associations with the holidays (my dad died during the Christmas season and my mother had crises at the holiday season on a regular basis, including going into hospice at that time). This is all good advice.
- Raccoons Are Showing Early Signs of Domestication. Because that's what living in cities does to creatures!
- How Big Should Your Tent Be?. Rebecca Solnit on working with the enemy, politically, vs ideological purity.
- Exclusive: Trump administration orders enhanced vetting for applicants of H-1B visa. Of course.

Of course the children of those well off enough to have good health insurance will still be able to get vaccines. The goal here is to deprive the children of the poor so they will die of an easily preventable disease as part of RFK Jr's eugenics program.
The vaccine is very safe and saves so many lives by causing a 99% drop in cases. There is no other reason to do it than the deliberate slaughter of infants and children.

* Tuesday I had in home physio. She unlocked my shoulder, which really helps. It's the first time since the start of the Great Furniture Migration it hasn't felt like I had a dagger embedded in it. Of course the rest of the pain is debilitating, but I'll take spread out pain over being stabbed and the whole the arm failing to arm at random thing.
So after, I needed to go to the library quick and stop at the coop on the way back for cheese, veg, broth, and to see if there was any veggie loaf etc.. left, as I pretty much missed all November chances because of the one disaster after another/chaos. I estimated an hour an a half. Bwahahahaha!
Some asshole broke into my nearly thirty year old clunker. Locked my steering wheel trying to steal the car, tried to steal my radio, but it's the kind the front pops off, but you can't get the radio without specialized tools. All they got was my roll of paper towels I keep against condensation and some blank generic deposit slips I keep for emergencies with the name and number for the bank, but no personal details. They did not spot the jug of oil in the back or the dolly in the trunk for which I am grateful.
Wasted me so much time as the wheel wouldn't unlock so I couldn't turn my key. Radio's an asshole to put back together and I think they low key fucked up the wheel/ignition as I had a ten minute battle to unlock it at the library and a three minute battle at the grocery. This delay and the physio being very late meant I was now doing everything during rush hour instead of heading home as it was heating up. Sigh
I literally own nothing worth the effort of stealing at all except my lap tops which stay in the apartment and theoretically the apartment itself. Like they peeled some of the weather tape off the window that no longer closes the last half inch because the motor in the door is dead to get the jimmy in. I am not convinced they would make more than a few hundred selling it for parts.
One of my library books is missing. I had hoped it had slipped off the passenger seat, but if it did, it's gone. I know it's not on the library book shelf. I shall have to do a more exhaustive search. My worry is it could have been trapped between door and passenger seat and the thieves maybe grabbed it. Let up hope not.
The grocery store was inevitably packed with slow moving indecisive people, but it was worth it as I scored the last two korn loaves and the last three frozen tofurkey gravies. I am extra excited about tofurky graving as we stopped being able to get it in 2020 and I was worried it's gone for good. Korn loaf came back a year or two ago, but not in the quantities we used to get. This combination is the easiest protein I know of that I can actually eat. Five minute prep time. Perfectr when I'm too ill to manage anything much. Stab it a few times, pop it in a loaf pan and forget it. Heat the gravy in the microwave towards the end of the cook cucle. Slice loaf. Pull off plastic. Eat. Tofurkey gravy is the perfect vegetarian gravy. I will need to score some boca chick'n patties to make chick'n and gravy burgers with, but this is a huge win, really.
I blew 2/3rds my ebt, but it was worth it and I now have all the parts for home made soup too, plus things like the cheese.
Still, but the time I had it away I had the shakes bad, and I am still not in great shape. My arm works though at least, as much as it ever does.
* I went to sleep early and ended up spending about 20 hours in bed, which given how far my body had been pushed seemed about right.
Squirrel Reports that when I am asleep and she hears Squirrel moving around, she comes out and stands sadly in front of my door curtain, gazing at them with her big moon eyes and trying to lure them inside. There is no way to convey to her human concepts of privacy.
* I had planned to settle in Thursday night, do some work on the apartment, then really work on aggregate links, but just a lot things happened. Friday was kind of the same, so I am behind again.

Museums: Kimbell and Amon Carter
Today we took a museum day in Fort Worth and visited the Kimbell and the Amon Carter.
At the Kimbell, we saw the Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection exhibit. The works were Roman statues from the collection of a noble/royal Italian family. The interesting part to me was how many of them had been altered, mostly but not all in "modern" times, to make art that was interesting to collectors in the period that it was altered. (Modern in this case meant the Renaissance and later. One of the sculptures was altered in the workshop of Bernini's father.) My favorites were in the section of the exhibit on portraits of the Imperial family, where I learned that a lot of the statues believed to be of Imperial women were identified on the basis of their hairstyle alone, and now a number of them have been reconsidered. The curation was extremely good, with most of the statues having labels showing which parts were original, which parts were ancient sculpture pieces repurposed as part of the new statue, and which parts were later additions. Also, one of the statutes was left semi-restored so visitors could also see the conditions of the various sections of the works and how they were "restored" in the past.
We also saw Caravaggio's Judith Beheading Holofernes, which was on loan. I like most of the art but I don't care for his depiction of Judith. Spouse and I had a discussion about her wrist positioning: she looks like she's sawing Holofernes' head off but without sufficient force, never mind enough force to lop his actual head off. I prefer Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith, who looks like she's actually killing the guy.
Before we left we also visited our favorites, the Lee brothers and Caravaggio's Card Sharp.
After we were finished at the Kimbell, we went over to the Amon Carter for American Modernism from the Charles Butt Collection. Butt, for those who don't know, is from the family that owns the HEB grocery stores. The art choices were interesting, like the Pollock landscape, but the curation of the exhibit didn't do a lot for me. Instead of contextualizing the individual pieces in artistic traditions or explaining why Butt chose them, the Carter's curation team had reactions from local artists, which were honestly a little banal for my taste. If it drives other folks to the museum, though, I guess it works. I enjoyed the seascapes and the landscapes, but the flat industrial paintings that Butt seemed to like did nothing for me. Probably my favorite from this exhibit was a study for a larger painting set at Broadway and 47th in New York, with a lot of bright signs.
We did look at some other art including a flat industrial painting of oil derricks off Galveston, which I really enjoyed because I knew what I was looking at, and a favorite Childe Hassam which shows flags on the Waldorf Hotel.
We had more than filled our two hours of museum time, which is how long they say you can absorb new art, so we went home after the Amon Carter instead of staying for late hours at the Modern.

Weekly media report - for the week ending 2025 12 03
Books
Some Danger Involved, by Will Thomas. First in a series of Victorian noir detective novels. The plot is interesting but the writing is both historically accurate in some very unpleasant ways and reeks of testosterone. I'm not sure whether I'll read the next one.
While it doesn't count for formal reporting, I did read about 1.5 million words of Star Wars AU fanfic while I was sick this weekend. Also I have 3 or 4 books in progress. I need to commit to one and finish it!

Gig list - December 2025
I haven't been very regular about doing these posts this year, but I've made up my mind for 2026 that I'm going to be more regular. We went to Ambercon Northwest in November and otherwise were super busy but did no shows, including David Byrne, which I have regrets about. But it was cold and I was in a lot of pain and exhausted, so I missed it.

Interesting things - 2025 11 30
- They’re doing to America what they did to Christianity. This stuff is why so many liberals from the South cringe when they hear Jesus stuff. It's not Jesus, it's his nominal supporters.
- Word of the week: Turkuterie. I'd rather have this than a giant turkey breast any Thanksgiving.
- What I Learned on My First Deer Hunt. Interesting to read as someone who enjoys hunted meat but is not interested in participating in a hunt.
- How Stephanie St. Clair Became The ‘Numbers Queen’ Of Harlem. I had heard of her but didn't know her story.
- How to Reject Someone Nicely. Useful tips to consider.
- The Unbearable Whiteness of the Goodreads Choice Awards. From last January but still relevant. TL;DR: the site's demographics are white women 25-44 and the reader's choice awards reflect that.
- Barcelona's Sagrada Família becomes world's tallest church. I remember visiting Barcelona as a teenager when the church was much smaller. It brings me joy to see it move toward completion.
- The best Doctor Who speeches of all time, ranked. The title lies because it's only New Who and the Genesis of the Daleks speech is right up there with any of these.
- Is ‘Gentle Density’ Too Much for Single-Family Neighborhoods in Dallas? Gentle density means duplexes, triplexes, ADUs (granny flats) and similar small increases in density, as fought by every NIMBYer in the world.
- Why Is DC’s Phillips Collection Selling Off Its Masterpieces? Good questions about deaccessioning vs new acquisitions.
- 35 arrests in Bulgaria in a large art trafficking investigation. A friend of mine who's involved in the money and security side of the art world posted this.

Look! I remembered to post before December started this year!
Hello, friends! It's about to be December again, and you know what that means: the fact I am posting this actually before December 1 means
karzilla reminded me about the existence of linear time again. Wait, no -- well, yes, but also -- okay, look, let me back up and start again: it's almost December, and that means it's time for our annual December holiday points bonus.
The standard explanation: For the entire month of December, all orders made in the Shop of points and paid time, either for you or as a gift for a friend, will have 10% of your completed cart total sent to you in points when you finish the transaction. For instance, if you buy an order of 12 months of paid time for $35 (350 points), you'll get 35 points when the order is complete, to use on a future purchase.
( The fine print and much more behind this cut! )
Thank you, in short, for being the best possible users any social media site could possibly ever hope for. I'm probably in danger of crossing the Sappiness Line if I haven't already, but you all make everything worth it.
On behalf of Mark, Jen, Robby, and our team of awesome volunteers, and to each and every one of you, whether you've been with us on this wild ride since the beginning or just signed up last week, I'm wishing you all a very happy set of end-of-year holidays, whichever ones you celebrate, and hoping for all of you that your 2026 is full of kindness, determination, empathy, and a hell of a lot more luck than we've all had lately. Let's go.

* I got invited to a Friday Friendsgiving thing Thursday night, which was really too short notice for me. I am really struggling to recover from the Great Furniture Migration a couple weeks ago and all the sleep disruption and stress from dealing with phone and contractor things. I am still in pain and covered in bruises and I'm really struggling to do even the basics. I would have had to bake something on no real notice and I just couldn't handle it physically.
After I went to bed Friday, I also noticed my sinuses were bothering me, so now I'm playing Allergen or Pathogen, one of my least favorite guessing games, right up there with what's that smell. I did wear an mask when assorted workmen and such were here the last few weeks and I'm fully vaxxed. I keep going back and forth on cold vs. allergies. It's likely best I didn't go as it's about 50/50 on me being contagious, and that was reason enough to bow out.
I still have almost no spoons from being pushed to hard physically, so I've made no progress at all on the living room this week, beyond slowly migrating some plants inside and spreading out some others that are likely staying out there, and the usual stuff that must be done like feeding, watering, litter boxes. I am molasses slow and unsteady.
Instead, I have been chipping away at link backlogs, as y'all may have noticed.
